World Cup record for fastest century set by Aiden Markram .pic-AFP

In the first 26 One Day Internationals (ODIs) played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, just two innings—the most recent one occurring during the 2011 World Cup—have exceeded 300 runs. Even with a solid foundation of constant boundary rain today against Sri Lanka on the same field, South Africa nevertheless managed to score 300 runs in 41 overs. Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen continued this impressive effort, shattering the previous mark set in the World Cup match against Sri Lanka. The previous record for a team against Sri Lanka was Australia's 417 runs in 2015. In this World Cup game, three batsmen from a single side became the first to record a century in a single inning.

South Africa's batting debut after losing the toss, however, was a failure as they lost their skipper early. Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen's second wicket partnership offered promise. However, South Africa reached 118 runs in 20 overs and 206 runs in 30 overs after scoring 48 runs in the opening 10 overs.

Dussen struck two fours against Sri Lanka in the 31st over to complete his century in the World Cup. In their matchup with Sri Lanka, he and de Kock broke a previous record. Dussen reached 103 runs off 103 balls after de Kock left. He was unable to stay for very long, as the innings ended at 206-5 in 37.1 overs.

Markram and David Miller assumed control when Dussen left and led the Proteas past 300 runs. Miller reached his century after facing 49 balls, ending the innings at 264 runs in 46 overs. Markram faced 34 balls and scored 50 runs before being caught.

In the end, South Africa scored 300 runs in 50 overs while losing 5 wickets. From then, South Africa was further pushed by David Miller and Marco Jansen, who finished unbeaten at 39 off 21 balls and 12 off 7 balls, respectively.

Madushanka shone out among the Sri Lankan bowlers with two wickets despite giving up 86 runs in 10 overs. However, all bowlers had to work hard for their runs in a match where the Proteas produced such an impressive batting performance.
